Is IGTV the future of video platform? My Thoughts.
Instagram is being aggressive -once again- since the last time they took down Snapchat with their Story feature. And now they released a new video platform called Instagram TV or IGTV and go head to head with YouTube since other video platforms like Vimeo and Periscope didn't make it. So now let's talk about it.
I don't know what, but I think YouTube is already such a big video platform. Some people maybe bored of YouTube for some reasons. No one can beat YouTube's power in the video platform world. Especially a new startup or whatsoever. So we need a big one, right? And a jerky mind came to Instagram's team and they decided to compete YouTube head to head on video platform as they are already big and everybody use it. They even launch an individual app for IGTV that you can download it now on your smartphone. But there are things that they decided not to "copy". They even do some kind of out of the box thing. Maybe they are also trying to copy Apple's method on removing the headphone jack. Yes, they decided to make IGTV a vertical formatted video platform like we used to do on Instagram Story. So here are my thoughts on IGTV.
First things first, the vertical. I, without any doubt, am not sure that vertical, or portrait mode is the best orientation for human to watch video. They said on their keynote event it was meant to be watched on mobile devices, so it is mobile friendly. They said we hold our phone everyday in portrait mode naturally and turning our phone to landscape mode for watching video is annoying. Well you know what?
NO IT IS NOT!
For me at least. Yes we hold our phones in portrait mode naturally BECAUSE it is very not comfortable to hold our phones in landscape mode. Remember, we are talking about holding phones, not seeing it.
And natural? C'mon, really? Even our eyes were made in landscape mode. We have our left and right eyes, not top and bottom eyes.
About that vertical and horizontal thing, you know, they were there for their own function. Horizontal mode or landscape mode that we used to see on most of videos is the standard because it is how human see things naturally. And the vertical mode is for pictures to look more focus on a subject because it is narrower. For example is portrait photography on human's face and expression. And it is a different thing with Instagram story or Snapchat. It is only for a short 15 seconds, so it is going to be okay to watch it on a portrait mode. But for 10 minutes? An hour? 😵 Not to mention watching IGTV on desktop is more annoying. Oh wait, it is not meant to be watched on desktop.
And also I'd like to talk about professionals. MKBHD said that slowly all of those "professional YouTube features" like monetising are coming to IGTV. Just like I've mentioned before, this is a professional platform that potentially is going to take down YouTube. So Youtubers are making their way slowly to IGTV as you can see there are already a lot of them that have tried IGTV. But if this is going to be the future, are they going to stick with the "tall" aspect ratio? Will the creators put their camera on a different orientation on their tripods?
For me, the answer is no. All of the things that Instagram did is only for Instagram and IGTV. Yes the portrait mode on IGTV is going to be a thing for a couple months, and yes it forces us creators to be more creative, and there is nothing wrong there but this is only for them and not for the other platforms.
And lastly, Instagram. Remember when they limit photos to be only 1:1 aspect ratio that we have to download third party apps so we can put our landscape photo fully. They have now changed it and we can post our beautiful 10 too longed images panorama in one post. And also they changed the video limit from 15 seconds to full one minute. The thing is, they are changing and there are still a lot of possibilities. Depends on the fortune cookies they bite. Our task is to enjoy it and keep making a good content. I did make a portrait cinematic video for my Instagram story. One about my trip to Bromo Mountain and another one is about coffee. I enjoyed that. It was a lot of fun to try something new.
I could be wrong guys. But if they can make a similar video platform system like YouTube, but with better monetisation, hmm, who knows?! Let's just see.
See you on my next post. Peace out!
